Zeltro › AI app builder cost comparison 2026, and what Zeltro costs instead

What AI app builders really cost

A dollars-and-tokens comparison of Lovable, Bolt.new, Base44, Emergent, Hercules, Replit, Framer, Relume and Wispr Flow against building with Zeltro and the AI you already pay for. Real plan prices, realistic usage, hosting included on both sides, and a token test we ran ourselves.

Most AI app builders are a layer on top of the same few models: Claude, GPT and Gemini. You pay the builder, and the builder pays the model provider. Zeltro takes the layer out. Your agent talks to the model directly, on the plan or key you already have, and Zeltro handles everything around it: the projects, the databases, the servers, and 214 ready-made apps.

This page puts numbers on that. Every price comes from the vendor's own pricing or documentation page, checked on 30 September 2026, and the sources are listed at the bottom. Where we used what users report rather than what vendors publish, we say so. Hosting and domains are counted on both sides.

Who is actually doing the AI work#

The builders say so themselves.

Service The models behind it Can you bring your own key?
Lovable Claude, per Anthropic's own Lovable case study No
Bolt.new Claude Sonnet by default, Claude Opus, and the Claude Agent SDK; open-source models on its cheapest plan No: "Bolt handles model selection"
Base44 (Wix) Claude Sonnet and Opus 5.5, GPT, Gemini Flash, and its own "Base 1," fine-tuned from open-source models No
Emergent Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 No
Hercules "We pay… OpenAI and Anthropic," behind its own tier names No
Framer Claude Sonnet and Opus, GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.6, in its model picker Only through its External Agents preview
Replit Agent GPT and Claude models No
Zeltro Whatever you choose: Claude Code, Codex, Gemini, Qwen Code, Aider, OpenCode, Hermes Agent, any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, or a model on your own computer Yes, always. It is the only way it works

So the question is not whether to use Claude or GPT. It is whether to pay for it through a middle-man, in credits that expire, or directly.

What one request costs#

A "request" here is one prompt taken through to a finished change: what a builder calls a message or a credit.

Where the request runs What it costs Where the number comes from
Lovable about $0.25 a credit ($25 for 100); "add authentication" is 1.2 credits Lovable's plans and its own credit examples
Bolt.new about $0.25 a message ($25 for 10M tokens, which Bolt puts at about 100 messages); larger projects use more per message Bolt's pricing page
Base44 $0.20 a credit ($20 for 100); a complex change is 2 credits, an app-wide change 3 to 4 Base44's credits page. Users report 3.5 to 4 credits a prompt, or $0.70 to $0.80
Hercules $0.29 to $0.50 a credit; Hercules says "we cannot provide estimates" of credits per request Hercules's pricing and credits page
Emergent $0.17 to $0.20 a credit; credits per request not published Emergent's plans and credits page
Replit Agent "typically less than $0.25" for a simple request, several dollars for a complex one Replit's pricing page
Zeltro, Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus $20 a month, flat, within the plan's usage limits Anthropic and OpenAI pricing
Zeltro, Claude Sonnet 5.5 API $0.18 to $0.27 for a complete multi-step task Measured by us, see below
Zeltro, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash API about $0.03 OpenRouter prices, including its fee
Zeltro, a local model about half a cent of electricity A 30B coding model on a 24 GB GPU

To be fair to the builders: a request through your own frontier-model key costs about what one of their credits costs. They are not wildly overcharging per token. The savings come from everything around it, which is what the rest of this page is about.

Where the money really goes#

  • Credits expire. Base44, Hercules and Framer credits reset every month; Lovable's and Bolt's roll over for two months at most. A $20 AI subscription has limits too, but it is not a meter that runs down while you are asleep.
  • Failed fixes are billed. Bolt's own docs warn: "Avoid clicking Attempt fix over and over… each attempt uses tokens." Base44's credits are "non-refundable for… AI mistakes." Users report burning 10 to 15 million Bolt tokens on bug loops and $70 in one night on Replit.
  • Every live app costs extra. Emergent charges 50 credits a month for each deployed app, about $10. Relume's custom domains are "from $12 per project" a month. Framer prices every site separately and adds $20 a month for each extra editor. With Zeltro, one small server at $5 to $7 a month hosts all of your apps.
  • Prices and terms are theirs to change, and your app can't easily follow you out. Lovable's terms say plan limits "may change from time to time." Base44 doubled the credits some AI calls use on 22 September 2026, after "a price rise from the model provider." Framer reworked its plans twice in eight months, and its terms allow "no more than a 10% annual raise" if you don't downgrade. With Zeltro your app is ordinary code on your own machine, and if your AI provider raises its prices you switch providers in a minute.
  • Your cheapest options are locked out. None of these builders let you use a $0.03 model, a free local one, or the subscription you already pay for.

Three realistic scenarios#

Each scenario uses monthly billing, the plan the usage actually needs, and hosting and domains on both sides. The charts come straight from the same model as the savings calculator, so you can change any of the numbers and see what happens. The Zeltro figures include the one-time US$99.99 business license in the first year where the work is commercial.

A hobbyist: one app, about 150 requests a month#

Personal use, so the Zeltro app is free.

  • With Zeltro$311–$335
  • Replit Agent$264–$744
  • Lovable$300
  • Emergent$480–$1,020
  • Bolt.new$600–$1,200
  • Base44$600–$1,200
  • Hercules$864–$1,287

First year for a hobbyist: one app, about 150 requests a month. Hosting and domains included for every option. “With Zeltro” is a $20 AI plan and hosting; Zeltro itself is free for personal use. Solid bar: low estimate; faint: high. Work out your own savings.

This is the closest race, and we will say so: if you would buy a $20 AI plan only for this, Zeltro with one live app comes to about the same as Lovable's cheapest plan, which throws in five free credits a day. But most people who build with AI already pay for ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro. Then Zeltro's whole cost is the server and domain, about $71 to $95 a year, or $116 to $167 on a cheap API model. And if the app only runs on your own computer, it is nothing at all.

A freelancer: three client apps, about 600 requests a month, all live#

  • With Zeltro$433–$457
  • Replit Agent$792–$2,952
  • Emergent$1,800–$3,742
  • Lovable$2,400
  • Bolt.new$2,400–$3,001
  • Base44$2,400
  • Hercules$3,108–$4,548

First year for a freelancer: three live client apps, about 600 requests a month. Hosting and domains included for every option. “With Zeltro” is a $20 AI plan and hosting, plus Zeltro’s one-time business license. Solid bar: low estimate; faint: high. Work out your own savings.

Zeltro comes to $433 to $457 in the first year on a $20 AI plan, $373 to $505 on a cheap API model, and $1,393 to $1,417 if you move up to Claude Max ($100 a month) for heavy days. That includes one small server for all three apps, three domains and the license. The builders run from $792 to $4,548. In the second year, the license is already paid.

A team of three: about 1,500 requests a month#

  • With Zeltro$913–$937
  • Replit Agent$1,872–$7,272
  • Base44$3,012–$6,072
  • Emergent$3,742–$8,251
  • Bolt.new$4,320–$9,001
  • Lovable$5,760–$6,042
  • Hercules$8,976–$11,676

First year for a team of three: about 1,500 requests a month. Hosting and domains included for every option. “With Zeltro” is a $20 AI plan and hosting, plus Zeltro’s one-time business license. Solid bar: low estimate; faint: high. Work out your own savings.

Zeltro is $913 to $937 with a $20 plan each and $643 to $937 on cheap API models. Put all three people on Claude Max and it is $3,793 to $3,817, the one case where Zeltro costs more than the cheapest builder estimates (Replit and Base44 at their most optimistic). The builder estimates' low ends assume about one credit a request, while users of several of them report two to four.

Websites and dictation#

Framer and Relume build marketing sites rather than apps, so they get their own comparison: three sites, live on custom domains, for a year.

Route Three sites for a year How it adds up
Framer Basic $360 or more $10 a site a month, billed yearly ($15 monthly), plus $20 a month for each extra editor
Relume Publish about $936 Pro "from $14" plus a custom domain "from $12," per site, per month
Relume, exported to Webflow about $756 Relume Starter "from $18" a month, plus Webflow Basic at $15 a site a month, billed yearly
Zeltro about $105 ($205 for a business) One $6 server for all three sites, three .com domains at $11 each, and the license once if it is business use

And if what you want is to talk to your AI instead of typing: Wispr Flow Pro is $15 a month ($12 billed yearly), or $144 to $180 a year, and transcribes in the cloud. Zeltro's dictation runs Whisper on your own computer and costs nothing.

We measured the tokens#

Zeltro's claim is that it saves tokens, so we tested it. We gave Claude Code (Sonnet 5.5) the same job twice: install an app with its database, get it running, and prove it with curl. Once with plain Docker, once on a machine with Zeltro. Both runs of each pair worked.

App Agent alone Agent + Zeltro Zeltro's app library
Ghost (blog, with MySQL) $0.18, 96 seconds, 4 steps $0.27, 126 seconds, 8 steps* One click, no AI
Plausible (analytics, with Postgres and ClickHouse) $0.22, 234 seconds, 6 steps, one crash loop to fix $0.24, 62 seconds, 5 steps One click, no AI

* We asked for MySQL; Zeltro's Ghost installer uses SQLite, so the agent spent steps converting it.

The honest reading: a good agent installs an app for about 20 cents either way, and most of that is the agent re-reading its own instructions at every step. With Zeltro it was nearly four times faster on the harder app and did not hit the crash loop. But the real saving is that you do not need the agent for this at all. Installing any of the 214 apps in Zeltro's library takes a click and uses no AI, so your tokens go on your own app instead of on plumbing. Setting up a new Laravel, Django or Next.js project from New project works the same way.

The raw results, the two scripts with the exact prompts (Ghost, Plausible) and how it was run are published, so you can check them or run the test yourself.

And the memory#

Sharing databases saves memory as well as money. We started five projects' worth of their own databases, on the same versions Zeltro uses, and compared them with Zeltro's shared ones on the same machine, which were busy serving real projects at the time.

Five projects Each with its own Zeltro's shared ones
MariaDB 12.3 494 MB 85 MB
Postgres 17 139 MB 75 MB
Redis 8 41 MB 7 MB
Total 673 MB 167 MB

That is four times less, measured idle; under load each separate database grows on its own, so the gap widens. (How we measured.)

How we counted#

  • Usage. One request is one prompt carried to a finished change. 150 a month is a few prompts a day; 600 is steady daily work; 1,500 is three people doing that.
  • Builder plans. The cheapest plan that covers the usage, billed monthly, with top-ups where the plan runs out. Where a vendor does not publish credits per request (Hercules, Emergent), we assumed one to three, and said so.
  • Zeltro. The AI plan or API that covers the usage (Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus at $20, Claude Max at $100, or pay-per-use APIs at published prices), plus $5 to $7 a month per small server (Hetzner, DigitalOcean, Lightsail or Vultr) and $11 a year per .com domain. The business license is counted once, in the first year.
  • What is not counted. Your time, which matters more than any of this, and which is exactly what bug loops and credit limits eat into. Also the hardware for a local model, which only makes sense if you already own it.
  • Prices change. Several of these changed their plans in 2026 alone. Check them before you decide, and if something here is out of date, tell us and it gets fixed.

Questions

Is Zeltro cheaper than Lovable, Bolt or Base44?

For steady work, yes, by a wide margin. A freelancer with three live client apps pays about $433 to $457 in the first year with Zeltro on a $20 AI plan, hosting and license included, against $792 to $4,548 on the builders. For a hobbyist buying an AI plan just for this, it is about even with Lovable's cheapest plan; if you already have ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro, Zeltro costs only your hosting. The savings calculator works it out for your own numbers.

Do AI app builders use Claude or GPT?

Most do. Lovable, Bolt.new and Emergent run on Anthropic's Claude; Base44 and Framer offer Claude, GPT and Gemini models; Hercules says it pays OpenAI and Anthropic. With Zeltro your agent uses those same models directly, on your own subscription or key.

What does Zeltro cost?

The Zeltro app is free for personal use, hobby projects and learning, with no account. A business using it buys a lifetime commercial license once, for US$99.99. You pay your AI provider directly (or nothing, with a local model), and your own hosting if you put apps online.

Does Zeltro save tokens?

Installing any of its 214 apps, or starting a new project, uses no AI at all, so those tokens are saved completely. When we had an AI agent do the same installs itself, it cost about 20 cents either way, but took up to four times longer without Zeltro.

Can I use Zeltro with a free AI model?

Yes. Point it at a model running on your own computer through Ollama, and building costs only electricity. A 30B coding model runs on a 24 GB graphics card or a Mac with 32 GB of memory. Quality is below the best paid models, so many people use a cheap API model instead, for a few dollars a month.

Does Zeltro host my app?

No, you host it wherever you like, and one small server at $5 to $7 a month holds all of your apps. If you would rather not deal with it, I do that as a service.

Use the AI you already pay for

Zeltro connects your AI agent straight to Claude, GPT, Gemini or a local model, with no credits in between. Free for personal use, with no account.
